There are mentors who teach you a skill, and then there are mentors who shape the course of your life. Dr. Puckett was the latter. He was a true giant in plastic surgery and committed his life to improving the field and training generations of future surgeons.
Without him, I would not be where I am today. He taught me everything I know about plastic surgery and more importantly, he taught me to believe I belonged in it. He was a fierce champion of female surgeons, always going above and beyond for his residents. He was a steady, patient presence that made even the most intimidating new surgeries feel possible.
In the OR, you’d find him covered in warm blankets carefully guiding his team. There was always music. He had a particular fondness for sad songs, the kind that would “bring a tear to your eye”.
Outside the OR, he was just as extraordinary.
I will always treasure the annual resident ski trips to Vail, where he patiently taught me to ski and reminded me that “bumps are your friend.” He would frequently invite us over for MMA fight nights, sharing his famous boat drinks and morel mushroom sliders, while spending time with his beloved Great Danes, named after MMA fighters, of course. Even his weekend uniform was unmistakably him: a Canadian tuxedo, leather jacket, and aviators
He showed the world that excellence and warmth can coexist. That leadership can be gentle. I will carry him with me into every operating room, every teaching moment, every chance I get to support someone the way he supported me. His legacy lives on through all of us who were lucky enough to learn under him.
